Safety & Compliance
A safe, compliant and well-maintained oil tank is the foundation of a reliable heating oil system. Whether you are installing a brand-new oil storage solution, replacing an ageing or failing tank, or upgrading your existing installation to meet current regulatory requirements, BATA provides a complete tank supply and installation service backed by our OFTEC-registered engineering team.

Is It Time for a New Tank?
Many oil tanks in the region are now 15–20 years old or more and may be approaching the end of their service life. Older steel tanks can corrode, while plastic tanks may develop cracks and UV damage. Leaking tanks can cause serious environmental damage, so we strongly recommend professional inspection of older tanks.
BATA supplies and installs steel and plastic bunded (double-skin) tanks that meet current legislation. Their secondary containment helps prevent leaks and spills from reaching the environment and is strongly recommended for new installations.
Testimonials
"Our old single-skin tank had been in place for over thirty years and we knew it needed replacing before it became a problem. The BATA team surveyed it, advised us on the right bunded replacement for our site, arranged everything and had it installed within a week. The whole process was completely straightforward and the installation looks excellent. Couldn't have been easier."
"We needed a new agricultural fuel tank for the yard - a decent capacity with a proper dispensing setup for the machinery fleet. BATA came out, assessed the site, advised on siting and bunding requirements and installed exactly what we needed. It's been in place two years now and works perfectly. Knowledgeable team and a quality installation."
"I wasn't sure whether my existing tank needed replacing or could be kept going. The BATA surveyor was completely honest - he told me it had a couple of years left in it if monitored carefully and gave me a quote for when replacement becomes necessary. That kind of straight talking rather than pushing for an immediate sale has made me a loyal BATA customer."
FAQs
How do I know if my oil tank needs replacing?
How do I know if my oil tank needs replacing?
How do I know if my oil tank needs replacing?▾Key signs that your tank may need replacing include: visible corrosion, rust or surface damage on a steel tank; cracking, crazing or discolouration on a plastic tank; evidence of leaks or oil staining around the base or fittings; an oil smell around the tank when it shouldn't be present; or simply age - any single-skin steel tank over 15–20 years old, or any tank without bunded (double-skin) containment, should be professionally assessed. Call our engineering team to arrange a free inspection.
Do I need planning permission to install an oil tank?
Do I need planning permission to install an oil tank?
In most cases, domestic oil tanks up to 3,500 litres installed in the garden or at the side/rear of a house fall under permitted development and do not require planning permission, provided they meet certain conditions (not within a designated area such as an AONB or conservation area, not forward of the principal elevation, etc.). Permitted development rights may be restricted on listed buildings or in some designated areas. Your local planning authority can confirm if any restrictions apply, and our engineering team can advise based on your specific situation before installation.
What size tank do I need for my home?
What size tank do I need for my home?
A typical detached house heating with oil uses 2,000–3,000 litres per year. The recommended tank size is one that can store at least your average winter delivery quantity plus a safety margin. Most domestic customers choose a 1,000–1,500 litre tank, which allows storage of a good delivery quantity without being excessively large. Larger tanks (2,500–3,000L) can be worth the investment if space allows, as they allow you to buy in bulk when prices are lower and reduce delivery frequency. Our engineers can recommend the optimal size for your property and usage patterns.
How long does a tank installation take?
How long does a tank installation take?
Most standard domestic oil tank installations can be completed in a single day. BATA holds a good range of common tank sizes in stock at our Amotherby depot, meaning we can often install within a few days of receiving an order - considerably faster than many suppliers who rely on manufacturer lead times. More complex commercial or agricultural installations requiring groundwork or custom fabrication will take longer and we will provide a specific programme on request.
Can you remove and dispose of my old tank?
Can you remove and dispose of my old tank?
Yes - our installation service includes removal and responsible disposal of your old tank as part of the replacement package. Old tanks must be decommissioned carefully to ensure any remaining fuel is captured and residual vapours are made safe before the tank is cut up or removed. We handle this in accordance with current waste disposal regulations. Please do not attempt to cut up or remove an old oil tank yourself without proper training and equipment.
